Matisse Museum: a must-see cultural visit during your stay in Nice

During your stay on the sunny Côte d'Azur, Hotel Lakmi invites you to immerse yourself in the colourful world of Henri Matisse. A true lover of the city of Nice, this famous painter created an artistic style all his own, which influenced the greatest artists of his time. The museum, housed in a magnificent 17th-century villa in the Cimiez district, traces the history of his work. It's a colourful visit that celebrates Nice's cultural heritage. Let us take you there!

Matisse Museum

The Matisse Museum in Nice is a unique venue, housing one of the largest collections of works by the artist of the same name, donated by Henri Matisse and his heirs. Inaugurated in 1963 at the Villa des Arènes in Cimiez, the museum is housed in a majestic 17th-century Genoese villa.

As well as the permanent exhibition, which explores the development of Henri Matisse's work, the temporary exhibitions form a kind of extension to the museum's collection. The museum also hosts a number of workshops and events throughout the year, including a sketching workshop for children and an interactive guided tour, providing fun for all the family.

The Matisse Museum collection

With around 600 works and 130 objects, immerse yourself in the world of Henri Matisse, the painter who is the pride of Nice. Matisse immediately fell under the spell of the Côte d'Azur capital, and was greatly inspired by Nice, where he lived for 27 years. 'When I realised that every morning I would see this light again, I couldn't believe how happy I was. I decided not to leave Nice, and I stayed there practically all my life.'

During your visit, take a closer look at his creative work, through a journey where works and objects play off each other. Discover his works in the colourful, simplified style so typical of his art. Conveying emotion rather than being true to life is the keystone of his work.

This unique collection traces the development of his artistic career. As Matisse was himself his first collector, he kept the pieces that had a special meaning for him and his work. The museum's collection is thus a story being told by the painter.

Discover his most famous works of art, such as Nu bleu IV, Fleurs et fruits, L'Odalisque au coffret rouge...
